Peruvian exports to the neighboring country to the south totaled US$300 million until February.

The neighboring country to the south is one of Peru's main trading partners in the region. Hence the importance of promoting strategies that allow better use of the opportunities generated.

Over the years, Chile has established itself as one of Peru's main trading partners and, in the specific case of the Pacific Alliance, it is in first place, which makes it necessary to add new efforts to achieve better use. of the alliances in which both countries participate.

In the first two months of the year, exports to the neighboring country to the south reached US$300 million, which suggests a better result for the end of this year compared to that obtained in 2023, said the director of the Economics and Business Research Center. Global Association of Exporters (CIEN-Adex), Edgar Vásquez Vela.

“Bilateral trade has become increasingly rooted and connected. There are several instruments that relate us in a better way. One of them is the trade agreement between both countries, then there is the Pacific Alliance (PA) and the Trans-Pacific Economic Cooperation Agreement (TPP) follows,” he stated in an article published in the Económika Supplement of the Diario El Peruano.

Instruments

In this way, Peruvian businessmen have three instruments to trade with Chile under the best conditions. However, it emphasizes that the PA and the TPP offer better conditions for the development of value chains, promoting the generation of added value in both countries.

"There are still many opportunities to explore and in Latin America Chile has become our main export destination and on the tourism side it is our main source of tourists," he stated.

In this sense, he highlighted the efforts made by the Commission for the Promotion of Peru for Exports and Tourism (Promperú) to hold a Workshop in Santiago de Chile (Chile) in order to relate Peruvian businessmen with their Chilean peers to promote development. of new businesses.

During this activity called “Peru: unforgettable experiences” leisure and vacation tourism was promoted to the regions of Arequipa, Cusco, Ica, Lima, Loreto, Piura and Tumbes; as well as the tourism segment for meetings, incentives, conventions and events, which has a growing impact on the country's economy and which has been developing in cities such as Lima, Cusco, Ica, Arequipa and Loreto.

At the business conference held at The Ritz-Carlton hotel in Santiago de Chile, a total of 368 business meetings were held. The exhibitors were distributed among 10 Peruvian companies, the Iquitos and Lima Bureau, and three airlines. In addition, 60 Chilean companies attended.

With this space for business relations, commercial ties were strengthened between Peruvian businessmen and the main Chilean tour operators, who had the opportunity to learn more about the wide range of destinations that Peru has.

“For Peru to do some activity to promote business with Chile is extremely important. The private sector accompanies these efforts because ultimately the business roundtable is a platform that serves for Peruvian exporters and Peruvian tourism operators to meet their Chilean counterparts,” he stressed.

The goal is to deepen business ties and thereby generate new income and positively impact companies, in addition to boosting the creation of jobs, he added.

Tourism

Vásquez highlights that Chile is historically one of the main countries that send tourists to Peru in the region.

“Before the pandemic, we received almost 1,200,000 Chilean travelers and 75% arrived through the Santa Rosa border post in Tacna, generating a positive economic impact in regions such as Arequipa and Cusco due to their consumption in restaurants, among other services,” he says. .

He commented that in the first three months of the year the flow of tourists from Chile increased 61.7%. “Although we have not yet reached pre-pandemic records, we are on the right track.”

In this case, 81% of these travelers entered through the Santa Rosa Post, that is, through Tacna, which boosts the regional economy significantly.
