Uruguay will evaluate the feasibility of implementing a hydrogen train service

The Ministries of Industry and Transportation of the government of Luis Lacalle Pou signed a memorandum of understanding with the French consortium Setec to analyze the initiative.

This morning, the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mining of Uruguay (MIEM) and the Ministry of Transportation and Public Works (MTOP) signed a memorandum of understanding with the French consortium Setec to analyze the viability of implementing a hydrogen train service.

According to authorities, the project will involve the implementation of a passenger train that runs on hydrogen in the vicinity of Montevideo, along the first 60 kilometers of the Central Railway. The feasibility study of said train will be developed for 12 months, with possibilities of extension.

The Uruguayan Minister of Industry, Elisa Facio, highlighted that the feasibility analysis is integrated into the deployment of the second energy transition that the country seeks to face, with a focus on decarbonization, mainly in the transportation sector.

The Minister of Transportation, José Luis Falero, Facio and representatives of Setec participated in the activity. The French consortium is made up of the companies Egis and Setec with experience in the infrastructure sector.
