The Minister of Economy, Nicolás Grau, assured that the steel business in Chile has a future.

The delicate situation that the Chilean steel company Huachipato is going through was discussed in the Senate Economy Commission. In the instance, parliamentarians raised their questions with the Minister of Economy, Nicolás Grau, who participated in the session.

The Secretary of State acknowledged that the plant is currently in a delicate situation, but said he was optimistic in relation to the steel industry in Chile and assured that it has a future; He presented arguments, among them the need to partner with large-scale mining and long-term projects.

The senator of the Socialist Party, Gastón Saavedra, said that it is necessary to have the complete picture of employment in the area and assured that the Chinese would not be angry if higher taxes were applied to the steel they exported to Chile.

On the other hand, the Chinese companies that were notified of dumping requested information from the Anti-Distortion Commission through their legal representatives and lawyers. In addition, they requested time from the court to defend their position. This was also reported by the President of Union 2 of Huachipato workers, Fernando Orellana.

According to what is known so far, neither Huachipato nor MolyCop have presented the reconsideration required by the Anti-Distortion Commission to analyze, again and based on new precedents, applying differentiated tariffs to Chinese steel entering the country.

Let's remember that the deadline expires this Thursday.
