Mining exploration in Peru adds US$ 644 million in investments

The 2024 Mining Exploration Project Portfolio is made up of 75 projects located in 17 departments.

The Ministry of Energy and Mines of Peru (Minem) presented, through the General Directorate of Mining Promotion and Sustainability (DGPSM), the 2024 Mining Exploration Project Portfolio, made up of 75 projects located in 17 departments and a joint investment that amounts to US$ 644 million.

The new portfolio aims to explore to develop possible new exploitation areas, as well as extend the useful life of the mines that are in operation.

Likewise, the document specifies that all the projects are owned by private sector companies in the general regime stratum (large and medium mining) and cover the exploration of metallic substances.

Along these lines, 32 of the 75 projects listed are executing or are about to execute their exploration, because they already have all the required permits (IGA approved, Preliminary Prior Consultation concluded, Start of Exploration Activities authorized, among others) and They represent an investment of US$ 253 million.

Meanwhile, a group of 27 projects, which total an investment of US$ 263 million (40.9% of the total), is in the evaluation stage of the Exploration Authorization. While the last 16 projects are in the evaluation process of their Environmental Management Instrument (IGA) and concentrate an investment of US$ 128 million.

Regarding the type of mineral to be explored, copper projects top the list with 40 projects and a total investment of US$ 254 million, representing 39.4% of the total amount of the exploration portfolio.

It is followed by gold with 12 projects and an investment of US$ 191 million (29.6% of the total), zinc with 9 projects for an investment of US$ 84 million (13.1%) and silver with 8 projects and one investment of US$ 75 million (11.6%).

The DGPSM indicates that La Libertad leads investments in exploration with 18.6% of the global amount with 2 projects (US$ 120 million), due to the entry of Las Defensas and Palca, both gold projects of Compañía Minera Poderosa.

Pasco occupies second place, capturing 13.3% of the exploration budget, represented in 4 projects with a joint investment of US$ 86 million; while Áncash is in third position with 12 projects for an investment of US$ 83 million (12.8% of the total).
