Colombia suspends working hours in the public sector

The Legislative and Judicial bodies rejected President Gustavo Petro's measure and reported that they would work "normally."

The Government of Colombia ordered the suspension of the working day today, Friday, for those who work in public entities in order to save water and energy in the midst of the serious drought that the country is going through.

"Tomorrow we want to decree a civic day in Colombia so that people do not use electricity as much as possible," said President Gustavo Petro, during a public event on April 18. "Above all, reduce water consumption as much as possible," he added.

The measure implies suspending the working day in the public sector, while "citizens in general and private companies will decide whether to grant this date a non-working day," said the Presidency on the social network X (formerly Twitter).

In that same social network, the president asked the eight million inhabitants of Bogotá "to go out this weekend to places in other hydrographic basins to reduce consumption pressure" in the capital, where rationing of the transportation service is already underway. aqueduct.

Different sectors rejected Petro's decree and the Judicial Branch, for example, informed "all judicial servants and citizens in general that this Friday, April 19, 2024, the essential public service of administration of justice will be provided normally." .

In the same sense, the Legislature assured that it would not join the civic day decreed by Petro.
